Iâm fuming.
I knew Dadâs head for business was lacking, to say the least; I knew he preferred to ignore things rather than deal with them. But this is beyond anything I could have imagined.
I havenât slept a wink all night; in fact, I think Iâm wired on coffee and my, now depleted, hidden stash of biscuits.
I glance down at the papers strewn across the desk, my blood boiling.
The accounts are a mess and have been for a while; bookings are non-existent, theyâve barely put any money aside for advertising and thereâs no sign of a plan for how to attract people. To be honest, Iâm not sure how theyâve managed to keep the business going. And, it hadnât taken me long to discover theyâd had to cancel their WiFi subscription; a subscription Iâve now renewed at a cheaper price.
Iâm no longer surprised Dad had a heart attack; Iâm just surprised it hadnât happened sooner.
I jump as my phone rings and I spend the better part of a minute trying to find it, eventually locating it hidden beneath the sorry excuse for Dadâs accounts folder.
âHello?â I answer, breathless after my frantic search.
âNikki? Is that you?â Simonâs voice sounds like heâs at the other end of a tunnel.
âWho else would it be?â I snap without meaning to; my lack of sleep and the stress is starting to get to me. I wander over to the window hoping to pick up a better signal there.
âSorry, I didnât mean-â
âNo, Iâm sorry,â I interrupt. âI didnât mean to snap. Itâs just-â I glance back at the mess on the desk and sigh. âThings have taken a turn.â
âWhy? Is it your dad?â he asks, his voice tinged with worry.
âNo, no, nothing like that,â I assure him quickly. âItâs just⦠Iâve made some⦠discoveries.â
âLike what?â he asks warily.
âSimon, I was right; this place is in a mess,â I admit in a rush, suddenly needing to talk to someone. âThe finances are all over the place; their expenses far outweigh their incoming and they have literally zero bookings for this season.â
âOkay,â he says calmly and I can almost sense him trying to figure out how to keep me from freaking out. âIs it salvagable?â
I take a moment, considering everything Iâve come to learn over the course of the last several hours. It would make perfect business sense for me to tell my parents to give this place up as a lost cause; to sell up and use the money to downsize. But, as I gaze out at the view of the fields giving way to mountains, I can almost hear my dadâs comments from last night, and I know I canât do that. This place is their life; itâs what they know and love. âI think itâs worth a try,â I admit, despite my inner-business woman screaming at me to change my mind.
Simon doesnât speak for a while and, just as I begin to wonder whether Iâve lost signal, he says, âDo you have a plan?â
âNot yet,â I admit, despite the fact that I already have several ideas buzzing in my head.
